The days are getting longer. Spring will be here before you know it—then summer.
Some people are shopping for warm weather clothes. Others are looking forward to spring break. But then there are those of us who are beginning to think about…
summer tutoring!
For the full-time teacher, the prospect of summer tutoring is heavenly—no faculty meetings, no bus duty, no required curriculum, and—yes—a little extra cash.
But, for me, the best thing about tutoring is that I can devote all my attention to the individual I am working with. Of course, tutors still have preparation to do, but—instead of having to differentiate a lesson for the whole class—we can tailor our session specifically to one child. What a gift.
When I began to tutor, I knew nothing about setting up a tutoring business. I’ve learned a lot since then—by attending workshops, reading on my own, talking to my accountant—and also the hard way—by making mistakes!
Now I want to share what I’ve learned, with the hope that some teachers will be able to set up their own tutoring businesses without making the same mistakes I did.
So far, I’ve created three paid and two free resources for tutors, as part of my Be-a-Professional Series. (Check out the FREEBIES toward the end of the post.)
I am thrilled that three of the tutoring items are fillable PDF forms. Fillable forms are lots of fun! More about them below!
Establishing a Tutoring Business
Establishing a Tutoring Business is for teachers who are considering tutoring after school or during the summer. There’s a lot to think about before you set up a tutoring business. For example, you may not be able to tutor in your classroom because of conflict of interest laws. Establishing provides over 20 forms to help you sort out these issues:
-
-
-
- Conflict of Interest Laws
- Tutoring Subjects
- Where to Tutor
- Presenting Yourself to Prospective Clients
- Setting up the Business
- Finding Students
-
-
Several templates are offered in PowerPoint, so you can adapt them: two flyers, a two-sided brochure, and a background and policies statement. It took me ages to figure out these elements for myself, and these will save you a lot of time.
Another component of Establishing is Customizable Tutoring Contracts, which consists of 4 separate contracts that are fillable PDF forms.
What are fillable PDF forms? They are a special kind of PDF where you can digitally type in your own information on your device, and then print it up. This way your contract looks professional, since it is not filled out by hand. You can fill in your name, contact information, your client’s name, their contact information, the student’s name, and your fee. The contracts are also available as a standalone resource.
Launching your Tutoring Business
Launching your Tutoring Business is for the teacher who has done the preparation work for tutoring, has decided when and where to tutor, and has found at least one interested client. This kit is designed to follow Establishing a Tutoring Business . The topics below are covered in this resource, along with numerous suggestions. For example, I suggest that when you hold a meet-and-greet session with a parent/guardian and student, you bring all the materials you will be using in the lesson and demonstrate how you will teach. I don’t charge for that initial session.

-
-
- Initial Client Contact
- Meet-and-Greet Session
- Gathering Information on a Student
- Setting Goals for the Student
- Student Lesson Plans
- Ongoing Assessments and Progress Reports
- Staying Organized and Keeping Track
-
-
Over a dozen forms are provided for the above topics. The zipped resource also includes the following customizable supplementary materials:
- Lesson Record Template (PowerPoint)
- Progress Report Template (PowerPoint)
- Receipt Template (PowerPoint)
Tutoring Business BUNDLE
Can’t decide which resource might be best? Or want both of them? Both Establishing a Tutoring Business and Launching your Tutoring Business are available as a BUNDLE at 25% off the individual prices.
Tutoring FREEBIES
Now for the tutoring FREEBIES—and one of them is a fillable PDF form!! Yippee!
Every year, I keep track of the money I spend on tutoring so I can deduct these expenses from my tutoring self-employment income on my taxes. By writing everything down on the register, it’s easy to see what I’ve spent in the different categories, as well as running totals for each type of expense.
This freebie is included in both Establishing and Launching.
One of my favorite ways of preparing for summer tutoring is by writing out a calendar. (Sure, I put the appointments on my phone, too, but I’m one of those people who has to see things on paper to fully absorb them.)
This freebie is a fillable PDF form. On one of the three June, July, and August calendars, I can type in my students’ sessions, as well as any other responsibilities, and then print it up. This makes me feel both organized and professional!

I hope you will join me on the highly rewarding and enjoyable tutoring journey.

(By the way, although filling out fillable PDF forms is fun, learning how to create them was challenging, and I couldn’t have done it without Renee Dawn’s detailed directions: https://teacherink.blogspot.com/2016/08/create-editable-text-in-pdf.html?showComment=1520094601184#c6558250446413190090)
